Affirmation Child’s Craft - Building Self-Esteem With a Two-Part Craft Project

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Connie Bowen One thing I know for sure its never too early to start learning to think positive! Here is a simple craft that children ages five through seven will enjoy creating. It involves two parts: one is making the three dimensional craft, and the other is writing and repeating an affirmation. Affirmations are positive first-person statements written in the present tense. They are often repeated throughout the day. Its all a matter of giving our subconscious minds a positive blueprint for a happy, abundant life. This project is suitable for a small group of children also, for say a classroom or a church group. Materials needed: (available at your local craft store) A small mirror, maybe 2-3 inches in diameter. It can be any shape. It neednt be perfectly round. A small amount of air-dry nontoxic colored clay. Crayola makes a brand of clay that will work fine. Because it is air-dry clay, the project will not have to be baked in an oven, and it will harden in 24 hours. Method: Step 1. Each child chooses a small amount of colored clay. The clay can be squished and blended, streaked or whatever design the children want to do. Step 2. Mold the clay into a lumpy ball shape. Place one edge of the mirror on the top of the lump and push down, so that the bottom of the lump now makes a flat base, and the mirror is partway stuck into the clay. The lump should now stand up by itself, with the mirror placed firmly in the top part of the clay. Step 3. The lump can be decorated by pushing in the blunt end of a pencil to make holes, and/or striations can be created by drawing lines in the clay with an open paper clip. The children can leave their thumb prints in one area, and smear another area so it is smooth. The only limit is the childs imagination and common tools found around the house. Clay can be placed on the top edge of the mirror also, to hold it in place. Wipe the mirror clean before the clay completely dries. Set aside this lovely mirror creation. The second half of the project involves writing an affirmation to go along with the mirror. Some sample affirmations would be I value myself. I honor who I am. I am worthy. I love myself. My life is filled with good things. My life is filled with love. I appreciate my special skills and talents. A good point to remember is to phrase the affirmation so it has meaning to each individual child. Affirmations can be used to change the energy around any situation. As an example: If a child is having difficulty in a certain area of their life, or in school, an affirmation can be used to change and heal the energy around that situation. Repeating I feel loved and protected all day long, would help a child dealing with fearful thoughts of feeling alone and vulnerable. I know what is best for me, for a child dealing with peer pressure. As long as the affirmation feels natural and not forced, it will have a calming, soothing effect. Its very important to phrase affirmations in positive terms, not in negative ones. As an example, saying I am no longer selfish is not an affirmation, and would undoubtedly create a situation of more selfishness. Instead, to feel more generous, a person would repeat I am generous and loving to myself and others. And if the person were feeling selfish, perhaps because of an underlying fearful thought of never having enough, an affirmation would be I am always provided for, or I always have everything I need, or The Universe is a safe and loving place. I am abundantly cared for. Negative statements have a tendency to create more of a situation that is not wanted. As an example, I ran into a friend of mine at the gym. She was upset because she had forgotten her gym bag and now had to skip her workout. She told me shed been repeating to herself before she left the house, Dont forget your gym bag! Her mind focused on the word forget, and sure enough, it created that very fact. If she had been repeating, Remember your gym bag, or I always remember my gym bag, perhaps she would have been able to work out. Finishing the childrens craft project: After the children have written out their affirmation with the help of an adult on a sturdy card or thick paper which when folded can stand up by itself, place the card and the mirror together. The mirror will remind the children of their inner beauty and self-worth as they repeat their affirmation throughout the day. Anyone of any age can use affirmations to create positive thoughts which in turn will create a wonderful life of beauty, purpose and promise! (Note: Enhancements can also be added to the mirror and affirmation if desired, such as sequins, feathers, paper cut-outs, etc.) This article may be re-published freely as long as the following resource box is included at the end of the article and as long as you link to the URL mentioned in the resource box: Connie Bowens books have sold over 50,000 copies worldwide and still counting! Ingredients of Small Business Marketing

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Natalie Aranda A business may be small, but the efforts of operating it is not. Small business owners often wear many hats - financing, product development, marketing, sales and customer support. While major corporations have sufficient resources to kick off a thoroughly planned marketing campaign, small business marketing is often on a budget. Marketing a small business should not be limited to a single channel because of the size of your business. Customers will always go through the three phases of a purchasing decision making: 1) aware of the products or services, 2) collecting enough information before the purchase, 3) and action of purchasing. The ingredients of effective small business marketing provides the information they need at each stage of a purchasing process. Reach the Customers Most small businesses target local market. Your business, of course, should be listed on local phone directories. Ads on local newspapers and flyers will bring you business from your local communities as well. Distributing business cards is always one of the most popular and inexpensive ways for small business owners to market or advertise their services and products. For instance, some landscaping companies distribute business cards door-to-door in newly constructed communities. If your services involves with artistic design (interior design, web design etc.), color business cards or custom business cards are more effective. They show the artistic tastes of the designers. Provide Information About Your Products and Services Awareness of a product or service is the start-point for customers to make a purchase. They will further research and compare similar services or products before they make contact for possible purchase. Now that you need a brochure or a website to present your business with product details, testimonials etc.. If business card design makes a good first impression, brochure design and brochure printing (or booklet printing if you prefer) are effective for converting leads into sales. Brochures that you send out will get more attention if you enclose a personal note with personal touch to introduce yourself and your company. A professional Web site serves as an online brochure to promote your products or service so that the prospects can get the information about your business 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. Affordable Web hosting costs as little as $25-$50 a year. Call for Action Once customers have made up of their mind to purchase your services or products. The brochure or the website should offer clear direction for further actions. The advantage of a website over brochure is that you are able to update as frequently as you want, offer discount or incentives for customers who make purchase in a certain timeframe. When theyre ready, a transaction is just a few clicks on a website powered with online shopping carts. Natalie Aranda writes on small business and marketing. A Whole Bunch Of Nothing

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Leslie Fieger It is seemingly a common phenomenon that somehow spontaneously occurs to almost every teenager. It is the nothing thing. You can ask almost any question and the answer is nothing. What are you doing? Nothing. What will you be doing tomorrow? Nothing. It is followed closely by the nowhere thing. Where were you? Nowhere. Where are you going? Nowhere. And finally, the clincherI dunno. What do you want for dinner? I dunno. When will you be home? I dunno. What is the name of the movie you are going to see? I dunno. It seems like these teens are going and coming from nowhere and doing and planning on doing nothing. Why? I dunno. Shrug. Who knows? Well, fortunately, it is just a phase and soon enough, not only will they be quite willing to say where they have been, what they have been doing and for what reason; they will also be willing to tell you where you should go, how to get there and why. Now, it may seem like this nothing phase disappears from our lives as our hormones settle down a little and our neurons get back to work, but this nothing thing sticks around. It is insidious. It sits there just below the surface waiting for the right moment to take over again. Adultsfully-grown, and supposedly fully functional, human beings will suddenly revert back to the nothing, nowhere, dunno phase when asked any question to which they do not yet have a prepared rationalization or excuse. This is critical! It is not that they actually do not have or know the real answer; it is because they do not yet have a valid sounding excuse or rationalization prepared and rehearsed. Parents know that their teens are practicing avoidance when they use these one-word dismissals. Somehow, we forget to apply the same wisdom to adult human beings, including ourselves. Whenever we are called, by inclination or by circumstance, to do a little self-evaluation, the answers we get back to the questions we ask ourselves are often a whole lot of nothing, nowhere and I dunno. So ask yourself thiswhy arent you living the life of your dreams? What comes back? Whats the answer you supply to you? Is it some well-prepared and rehearsed rationalization or excuse? Or, is it some variation of nothing, nowhere, I dunno. The real answer??? I suppose it is ok to not answer others when they ask questions that you do not wish to supply the real answers to; but, you must be firm and resolute with yourself. Do not allow your mind to get away with giving you avoidance responses when you are after answers. Do you truly desire to have a prosperous and abundant life?? If the answer is YES, then you must get specific. Stop allowing yourself to be satisfied with a whole bunch of nothing. What are you doing? Why? Where are you going? Why? When will you get there? Herbal Remedies for Cough and Bronchitis

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Michael Russell If you are one of those people who get rained on a little and get bogged down by the flu the next day, you are probably sick of having coughs and colds and sick of taking medicine over and over again. Sometimes, it is good to know that there are a lot of herbal remedies that are available, effective, easy to use and can replace the mundane cough syrup and escape its side effects. Bronchitis is a serious medical condition. If you present the symptoms for this, please consult with your physician as soon as possible. These herbal treatments are here to help but are not guaranteed cures for conditions as serious as bronchitis. Coughs There are a lot of traditional and herbal treatments for coughs and some are indeed stranger than others. The more common ones that are still widely used today involve using honey and lemon. Other herbs include garlic, onions, lavender, thyme, linseed, nettle and dock. Still others are cabbage, carrots, turnips, comfrey, rosemary, balm, glycerin and peppermint. Among all the herbs, eucalyptus is still the most popular cure. There are many recommended herbal drinks to treat a cough. One remedy is boiling coltsfoot in water with garlic and brown sugar. An infusion made of coltsfoot leaves sweetened with honey is also said to do the trick. Another treatment is syrup made by boiling coltsfoot leaves with equal amounts of plantain leaves and honey. An herbal drink for coughs was based on a mix of dried sage, honey and vinegar. Another was based also on dried sage but with brown sugar and ginger in water. Another cure was formed by mixing and heating butter, vinegar and honey; also was mixing hart shorn, almond oil, hyssop, sugar and water. Another cure for coughs is an infusion made of hyssop, mullein, ground coriander and marshmallow leaves. The older traditional cures were stranger. One of the folk cures concerns boring a hole into a lemon and filling the hole with honey. The lemon is then roasted wherein the juices are collected and fed to the patient. A stranger remedy involved boring a hole into it and the hole was filled with brown sugar which is then left to sit overnight. The next day, the juices that were collected are given to the patient. Some of the older cures are harder to come by. One example of these cures is a mix of the juices of leeks and fresh breast milk of a nursing mother. Another less palatable remedy involved boiling two or three snails in barley water. You may not want to go through all this trouble for a cough. Bronchitis Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchioles of the lungs and is a lot more serious than cough. Actually, the cough is reduced to one of the symptoms of bronchitis. Although most cases require the treatment of antibiotics, there are still a lot of herbal remedies to help heal and relieve the symptoms of bronchitis. The more common remedies for bronchitis are eucalyptus, garlic, honey, ginger, cinnamon and tea. Herbs like bugle, butterbur, caraway, angelica, borage, coltsfoot and comfrey are known to help in the relief of the symptoms. Other herbs such as chickweed, chervil, fenugreek, fennel, ground ivy, liquorices, myrrh, madder, knotgrass and marjoram are also effective. Mullein, parsley, plantain, onion, sage and primrose, thyme, white horehound, watercress, speedwell and savory are also utilized in the treatment of bronchitis. Editing a Wedding Album

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Kenneth C. Hoffman So the Honeymoon is over, you had a great time and everybody is asking about your wedding album. What you have is several hundred unretouched images in no particular order. The studio has deleted all the obvious no-gos but you are still left with a formidable task. You have seen the sample albums at the studio and you wonder if you can ever make yours that good. A wedding album is foremost a story. It has a beginning and an end. Traditionally, the fronts piece is a close up photograph of your invitation surrounded by flowers from your wedding. An alternative could be a romanticized shot of the outside of your church, a montage of items relating to the wedding (garter, necklace, rings, boutonnires or other mementos). Following are highlights from your preparation photos. Must haves are getting dressed, primping in the mirror and making an entrance on the stairs. Dont skimp in this area because anticipation is most of the fun of a wedding. After the pictures coming down the aisle, try to set the scene with wide angle shots of the church followed by medium action pictures, then sprinkle in a few close ups for detail and facial expressions. Alternate viewing angles and include pictures of the parents in the pews. Make an effort not to place two similar pictures next to each other for an interesting viewing. Three pictures in a row depicting a moving event can mean much more than a single photo. Take advantage of the multiple photo montages but place them sparingly for the best effect. Park portraits can start off with a bridal portrait, then a bride and groom portrait. Different shots of the wedding party can be followed by family pictures and more bride and groom portraits. End up on a dynamite close up of the bride and groom. If you decide to include table shots, make sure you have every table covered. Split up the dancing pictures into groups, separated by table visits, group photos and fun shots. The reception story works best if the photos are place in chronological order. Every story has to have a happy ending so save a few romantic images for last. You should seriously consider allowing the studio to make your choices for you and arrange your album for the biggest impact. They are experts on what most people like and with a few hints from you as to which images are your favorites and must see photos, the studio will surely come up with a winner.
