EAT CARBS Without Gaining Weight!

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Sherry Granader You have lost weight by avoiding the carbs you pass up the local Bakery and order protein and vegetables at restaurants. You ask the waiter to take the bread basket away and forget dessert right!? Have you noticed a change in your mood? Do you still crave carbs? For many people, low-carb eating is not satisfying for the long term. They continue to eat their steak and eggs but at some point miss their whole wheat toast or their favorite pasta dish. It is possible to re-introduce carbs if you introduce the right carbs in the right way! You might gain some weight but that is because carbs hold water in the body. When you start adding carbs back in, you are going to store water which is a good thing. Start by looking at your diet! WHAT ARE YOU ACTUALLY EATING EVERYDAY? This might surprise you because many people are following low-carb diets but are eating more carbs then they realize! Many people start with a low-carb plan of less than 20 grams of carbs per day and then increase it gradually! Less than 60 grams per day is pretty standard during the weight loss phase! One slice of bread has 15 grams of carbs! The best way to start is to stay away from PROCESSED CARBOHYDRATES like white bread, white rice, white pasta, French fries, baked goods and snack foods! They are all processed in the body like sugar because they create an exaggerated insulin response which lead to overeating and less staying power because they have LESS NUTRIENTS! Look for carbs that give you the most nutrition! Steel-cut oats for oatmeal, whole-grain bread for toast. The fiber content promotes good gastrointestinal health which lowers cholesterol and keeps you full! Whole fruits are fine because they are low in calories, natural sugar and high in fiber! Beans and legumes will fill you up without fattening you up and low-fat dairy products like yogurt will strengthen your bones and help your body with weight loss. Weight loss still comes back to calories so as you add carbs back into your diet, you must watch your calorie intake! There are over 100 studies that show weight loss is primarily due to decreased calories not decreased carbs! Watch your portion sizes especially at restaurants! What foods do you keep in your refrigerator? Your office? Your car? Do you eat standing up? Or on the run? The best advantage about the low-carb diets is that it has made people aware of their eating habits and portion sizes! They realized there are some good things about carbs like stimulating the production of serotonin the mood elevating chemical in the brain. The best trick is to enjoy your favorite carbs but not all at once! Do not have garlic bread, cheesecake and pasta all in the same meal. Here are some low-carb foods that have great flavor and texture! NET CARBS Manufacturers calculate net carbs by subtracting the carbs that come from fiber or sugar alcohols from the total grams of carbohydrates. Since carbs from fiber are NOT absorbed and those sugar alcohols are NOT turned into glucose, they are thought by some not to count as much. The U.S. FDA currently does not have a definition of net carbs or digestible carbs. 1. low-carb whole-wheat tortillas these have 80 calories per tortilla with 2 grams of total fat and only 12 grams of carbohydrates they taste better when heating or grilled! 2. Whole-grain breads usually have 80-90 calories per slice and 0.5 grams of fat with 16 grams of carbohydrates. This bread tastes better toasted and is a better choice than light, low-calorie bread 3. Multi-grain breads have 60 calories per slice and only 9 grams of carbohydrates. Always better tasting when toasted. 4. low-carb pasta has about 190 calories per cup with 1 gram of fat you will see on the label 42 grams of carbohydrates that include 4 grams of fiber so a NET carb of 38. It is a little chewier than full-carb pasta remember look at your fist that is the amount you should eat anyway so choose your favorite. 5. High-fiber cereal has about 100 calories per cup with about 2.5 grams of fat. 11 grams of total carbohydrates with 6 grams of fiber so a net carb of 5 grams. Crunchy, sweet and filling! Try it with some vanilla soy milk. Whole-grain carbohydrates are ideal for weight loss! They are filling and less refined because the whole-grain is intact before it is processed. Look for ingredients like whole wheat, whole barley, cracked wheat, graham flour, whole cornmeal, whole oats. Refined grains have been processed to remove the bran and germ try mixing brown or wild rice with some white rice. The low-carb breads do not provide as much nutrition as whole-grain breads Wheat flour found in whole-grain bread is more likely to be enriched with vitamins, folic acid and iron! You can still enjoy some good carbohydrates and still lose weight painlessly and not feel deprived. Remember, portion control does count and so does exercise at least 30 minutes per day! Everyday! The Asbestos Coverup

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Marc Murray Possibly the most shocking, disheartening, and infuriating cover-up in American history is the concealment of the true dangerous nature of asbestos. The intentional cover-up of the harmful and deadly effects of asbestos contributed to thousands of illnesses and deaths of workers who were unaware of this deathtrap. Asbestos has been the sole cause of mesothelioma, asbestosis, and some forms of lung cancer. These merciless diseases have led to the loss of friends and family; all innocent people whose lives could have been saved by stopping the use of asbestos. Asbestos has been used for centuries, dating as far back as 3000 BC. This material was mostly used for insulation due to its temperature resistant qualities. Those who used asbestos in past times have noted that workers seem to die prematurely after working with asbestos. This simple revelation did not seem to thwart asbestos use during the Industrial Revolution in the late 1890s to 1900s. The high demand for Navy ships caused the use of asbestos to jump 17-fold at shipyards during WWII, endangering millions. The first documented asbestos-related deaths were in 1906. From this time on, companies that used asbestos in various industries made it their sole objective to hide the harmful effects from their workers. Asbestos was a common material used in shipbuilding, construction, and building. As asbestos companies learned more and more about the effects of asbestos exposure, they falsified documents to convince their workers that asbestos did not pose a threat. Instead of saving thousands of lives, the companies decided that profits were most important. Legislation finally was implemented to control the use of asbestos in the 1970s. Successful lawsuits against asbestos companies were brought and continue to this day. Unfortunately, this was too late for many who had been exposed to asbestos for years. Because the incubation period for these diseases, especially mesothelioma, is about 15-30 years, workers had no idea of their condition and found out too late that they were gravely ill. When diagnosed, mesothelioma victims have less than 24 months to live. Symptoms arise when the disease is in its advanced stages, therefore, eliminating the chance to cure the cancer. Mesothelioma is 100% lethal. This is the fate that the heartless companies bestowed upon their dedicated workers. The asbestos cover-up has burned itself into American history. It is a shame that asbestos companies could be so heartless and expose their own workers to certain death. The despicable concealment of the dangers of asbestos forever changed many industries and many peoples lives. Successful lawsuits have given some comfort back to families, and bankrupted the asbestos industry, but money can never buy back life. Hydroponics Gardening - An Introduction To Hydroponics Gardening For Beginners (Part 20) Disease

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By John R. Haughton Disease Control In Plants. Is Disease Going To Destroy Your Crop? Plants, like animals are vulnerable to disease. All living things are made up of a collection of cells. Plant and animal cell structure is similar in make up, having a cell wall containing the cells internal components, such as the nucleus and the protoplast: the ‘hollow’ part of the cell where the cell conducts activities. There are many different types of plant cell, but all cells, be they plant or animal, share some basic characteristics. Because they are cellular structures, plants are subject to disruption of their cells by invading organisms. Thus at the microbial level the plant may be invaded by pathogens. These are organisms which do harm or cause the death of the plant by extracting its nutrients, damaging the cell structure, or producing toxic by-products. These pathogens can come in the form of either viruses or bacteria. Both of these types of infection will do major harm to your carefully nurtured plant. Bacteria attack the plant cells in the same way that they attack our own cells. Think back to the last time you had a cold or flu, remember how unwell you felt and how your energy was depleted. The plant also has to use a lot of energy in order to stop infection from spreading. One way in which it can fight back is by sealing off the diseased area and so blocking the pathways available to the intruding pathogen. It has been found that plants also use Salicylic Acid (the active ingredient in aspirin) as a trigger to mobilize their defences against attack. To find out more about this mechanism visit http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/12/031209080025.htm Unfortunately, as there are no antibiotics that can be used on plants, the pathogenic bacteria are very difficult, if not impossible, to kill. They normally enter the plant via the site of some type of injury. For this reason, if no other, it is very important to check your plants daily for signs of damage from insects and other predation, as well as physical cuts and scratches. Virus attack is usually caused in a similar manner, but these organisms are very much smaller than bacteria and can enter via the tiniest mark. Once inside the plant they live within the cells and are unable to be killed without destroying the plant. Plants are also susceptible to fungal infections. Fungi, unlike the microbial pathogens, attack using spores. These can lie dormant for long periods of time and then be triggered to come to life. They are mainly an essential and welcome addition to the garden because they break down dead and decaying material and improve the humus content of the soil. Some, however, are bad news for the grower and cause disease within the growing area. Fungi in general tend to attach to the outside of the plant and use root like structures to penetrate the plant and steal its nutrients. For this reason they are vulnerable to chemical attack and destruction. There are various preparations available for eradicating fungal attack. The best form of defence against plant disease is vigilance and meticulous hygiene. Here are a few ways in which you can help to prevent attack within your grow room or greenhouse. Always wash your hands in hot soapy water before entering the growing area. Always destroy diseased plants and all their dead leaves and debris. Always use new, or well washed and sterilized, pots when planting new plants and cuttings. Always sterilize your secateurs and equipment before use. This can be done by dipping the blades in Methylated Spirit, shaking off any excess and then lighting it. Care must be taken not to either ignite the alcohol bottle or burn the user or equipment. If you wish, you can just dip them in the spirit and allow it to dry. The use of a naked flame on knife blades etc is recommended when taking cuttings. Allow as much free air between your plants as possible. This cuts down on the transmission of fungal infections. Ban all smokers from your growing area. Tobacco is one of the biggest causes of the spread of Tobacco Mosaic Virus which attacks various plants. It is carried on the skin of people who use tobacco products. Finally always be on the look out for changes in your plants appearance. This can be the early sign of a disease. Choosing the Perfect Wedding Rings

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By James Strutton As you are deciding on which wedding rings you and your beloved desire to wear as a symbol of your undying love for one another you may be interested in how this practice came about and the true meaning of wedding rings. The ring of course is a circle and a circle symbolizes infinity, agreement, harmony, rebirth and the universe. In ancient times the rings was connected with the Sun and Moon. It was believed that a ring would protect and was a magical guard, so to speak to ward off all negativity through its continuity. Rings were considered to be magical and/or sacred. Gods and Goddesses even wore rings such as in the Babylonian mythology with tales of the rings of Shamash and Marduk. Rings have always been associated with the magic, the zodiac, and even more. Even today, the wedding ring is believed to hold a kind of power that can be seen when a priest or minister blesses the wedding rings before the couple exchanges them. This practice symbolizes protective powers over their marriage or union. Now you may be wondering why a wedding ring is worn on the ring finger. Well, this also goes back to ancient times and once again magic. As you delve into history of the wedding ring and the reason, it is placed on the third finger you will marvel at some of the beliefs. Here are a few historical facts concerning the ring finger. In ancient times, the third finger was used to apply herbal medicines to the body because the effectiveness of the cure would be stronger. It was also believed that a nerve from the third finger went directly to the heart. In astrology, this belief is similar, the ring finger is called the heart finger because of the belief of the special nerve or vein that was in the third finger connected to the heart and was a symbol of loved and fidelity. No matter where you search throughout history the third finger has always been used a symbol of love, faithfulness, trustworthiness, and fidelity. With that said, you know just how important the wedding ring has been throughout history is not just a ring but was used as a promise and union between couples. So, now it is time for you to choose your everlasting wedding rings that will not only symbolize your love and devotion for one another but also withstand time and last forever, as your love for each other. As you begin looking online and at your favorite jewelers you will find many exquisite wedding rings and some are sure to be out of your price range. The number one thing to do is to set a budget. No matter how much you can afford to spend, you will be able to find the perfect set of wedding rings that will show your love. Next, you will have to decide what type of material you would like your rings to be created from. Weddings rings are designed from materials such as yellow gold, white gold, sterling silver, platinum, and titanium. Yellow gold is still one of the most popular materials for engagement rings and wedding bands and can be found in 10K, 14K, or 18K. White gold is becoming a bit more popular because it tends to look a tad more modern and stylish. Platinum is one of the hardest metals that is used to create engagement and wedding rings. Many people are now choosing this material because of its durability and the idea that like their marriage it will withstand time. Platinum is a very pure more so than gold, which is normally, only 75 percent gold and platinum rings are usually around 95 percent platinum. These rings do tend to be a bit more expensive but you are more than likely hoping that your ring will last forever, so the price is well worth a ring that is so durable. Next, of course is titanium. Titanium is kind of the new metal. It is very long lasting, lightweight and not very expensive. These are the most durable wedding rings on the market and are very popular among men because of their elegant style and withstanding power. Yes, you can scratch the ring, but overall they will withstand so much more wear and tear than any other metal. You may hear that you should choose a wedding ring that will match most of your clothing, but I totally disagree with this statement. A wedding ring is not just costume jewelry that needs to blend in with your outfits. Your wedding ring should be one that you desire to wear every day for the rest of your life. If you looking for a wedding ring to match your clothing then you are really looking for a mere decoration for your finger and not a symbol of everlasting love. Now you know what material you would love to wear but now comes the hardest part of all. You must now choose the style. First, you must decide if you both wish to wear matching designs or if you prefer your own individual style. The most common styles for wedding rings include the traditional plain bands, bands with beaded edges, bands with etched designs, two-tone bands, Celtic wedding bands, solitaire rings with a precious stone such as a diamond, and solitaries that have one larger stone with smaller stones circling. Choosing the perfect gemstone for your wedding ring can also be difficult. Diamonds of course are the most popular. However, even with diamonds, you have choices to make; you will need to decide on size and even color. Pink diamonds are now becoming very popular for many women. Remember not to choose soft gemstones such as amethyst or aquamarine as they can be damaged if worn every day. The harder stones are better for durability such as diamonds, rubies and sapphires. Remember, above all, these are the weddings ring that you both will wear for a very long time. It should stand for you love and devotion and commitment to one another. Choose one that will last. For 14 years Titanium Rings Studios has been making the finest quality handmade titanium rings and carries a full line of Weddding Rings, Engagement Rings, Celtic Rings, Tension Rings, Friendship rings. The Right Tools for the Task

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Terry Blackburn Gardening tools come in a very wide range of qualities and prices. Although the less expensive tools may look good value for money, in the end they workout more expensive because better quality tools last a lifetime unlike most of their cheaper alternatives that must be frequently replaced. Always clean tools carefully after use and oil them during the winter; the oil inhibits rust formation. Hoes: These are ideal for weeding and aerating the soil, and some types may also be used to create seed drills. Dutch hoe The versatile Dutch Hoe is designed to be pushed back and forth through the soil surface, with the blade parallel to the ground; other types of hoe should be drawn through the soil. The handle should be long enough for you to work in a near-upright position without back strain. It is easy to use and very versatile. It cuts surface weeds off at ground level. It is particularly useful for weeding between the vegetables. It will destroy annual weeds, but deep-rooting ones need repeated hoeing. Draw Hoe The draw hoe can be used for chopping weeds, but is more useful for hilling up or creating channels, known as drills, for seed sowing. The Onion Hoe The onion hoe is a thin bladed hoe that is recommended when removing weeds near vegetable plants. It is easier to handle than larger, heavy hoes. Rakes There are two main types of rake: general garden rakes and lawn rakes. Garden rakes are used for levelling and breaking up the soil surface before sowing and planting. Forks and Spades Forks and spades are both essential in general cultivation. Forks are better for lifting root crops and moving manure or compost; spades are necessary for digging areas of soil and making planting holes. Trowels and hand forks are ideal for use in confined areas. Handle Designs Handles come in various shapes. Y-type hilts are weaker than D-type ones because they are formed by splitting the shaft wood, but may be more comfortable for large hands Trowels The trowel is a very necessary garden tool; one, which just as the previous mentioned tools, should be of good quality if it is to give years of service. Hand Forks Hand forks are ideal for lifting and separating young plants. Dibber The dibber is a useful tool for planting bulbs and tubers. If you have a shaft from an old garden spade or fork, you can make your own dibber by simple cutting the handle and part of the shaft to a suitable length, tapering and rounding the end to form a blunt probe! Wheelbarrow The wheelbarrow is the workhorse of the garden; there is a very wide range of wheelbarrow models to choose from. Some of the lightweight, polypropylene wheelbarrows are excellent, though they obviously will not have the same life expectancy as the more robust, steel or wooden models. They do have the advantage that they can be left outside to withstand all the weather conditions, so are ideal for those gardeners who have limited undercover space. Miscellaneous Tools & Equipment In addition to the cultivation tools, you will find it necessary to have access to a Watering can, a Measuring tape and Line or thick string, which is attached to some form of pin, useful for marking out straight drills, and of course a good pair of soft, pliable Gloves. The cowhide type is my own particular favourite. Terry Blackburn. Internet Marketing Consultant, living in South Shields in the North-East of England. Understanding The 7 Day Detox Diet

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Clive Jenkins In today’s polluted and stressful environment, our bodies are put under a tremendous strain. Stress and environmental conditions actually help to retain the noxious toxins with our body which affect our immune system and make us more susceptible to disease and infection. With this simple 7 day detox diet plan, you can safely and efficiently rid your body of these harmful toxins, whilst losing a few extra pounds in the process. This plan aims to provide a complete balance of nutrients, and unlike liquid based plans, is completely safe for one week, with no adverse side effects. It is a perfectly natural method of cleansing the body, and it’s also not to difficult to achieve. Throughout the 7 day detox diet, eating fruit and vegetables constantly is a fantastic way to ensure your body is getting the right nutrients to keep it healthy and active. Your fruit can come from any source, whether it be fresh, canned (in natural juices) of dried, and will serve to really boost your immune system and your body’s healing properties. Again your vegetables, as long as they are not processed or contained in a salt solution, should be consumed frequently and are great for keeping up your metabolism and strengthening your immunity to everyday infections and are great for ridding the body of unwanted toxins and heavy metals. Beans and other pulses are also invaluable to the diet, fantastic for the heart, and are also quite filling as well, so it’s unlikely you’ll feel the hunger if you stick with pulses. Oats, potatoes, brown rice and water are additional essentials for your 7 day detox diet, and they will ensure you have the strength to remain active and participate in everyday activities. During the 7 day detox plan, you should avoid the obvious things, like sugary drinks and chocolate, although there are a wide variety of other food which should be avoided. Things like eggs , most meats with the exception of fish, coffee and tea should be completely avoided during this seven day period. An ideal breakfast for someone on the 7 day detox diet would be banana porridge. To make banana porridge, simply make regular porridge and add banana, honey, raisins and yoghurt to taste. For lunch, why not try a tuna and sweet corn baked potato, or how about potato salad with avocado? Dinner on the 7 day detox diet can consist of a vegetable stir fry, or baked salmon and vegetables. If you stick with the 7 day detox diet plan, you will surely lose weight. If you stick with the routine, and continue to exercise regularly, you’ll rid your body of those harmful toxins which will ultimately leave you feeling refreshed and stronger, as well as helping you burn off those pounds which have built up from years of bad habits and poor environment. Unlike other plans, this 7 day detox diet plan is the ideal combination of nutrients and volume of food, and is not too restrictive nor is it as unsafe as other programmes. Stick with it, and you’ll see the results within 7 days. Clive Jenkins recommends the Detox Diet Plan website which provides comprehensive information on Detox Diets. Anniversary Gifts - Seventh Anniversary

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Michael Russell Are you one of those people who believes that seven is a lucky number? Well, if so, then a seventh anniversary has to be very lucky and the anniversary gift ideas for number seven have to be just as lucky as well. We’re going to cover both the traditional and modern gift ideas for the seventh wedding anniversary. After a bit of a rough time with anniversary number six, unless your man is an avid golfer and you haven’t gone the wood route for anniversary number five, the traditional and modern gifts for your seventh wedding anniversary actually offer a variety of great ideas to make your seventh anniversary one that you won’t have to sweat over. The traditional gift ideas for your seventh anniversary are wool and copper. We’ll take wool first. Wool is common in many types of clothing. Probably the most common type of garment that is made of wool is the sweater. And guys, we all know how great ladies look in a nice sweater. In case you think not, just take a good look at Lana Turner in one of her famous sweaters. Yes, your wife will absolutely love a nice warm woolly sweater, especially when it comes to those cold winter months. And, if your anniversary actually comes during one of those cold winter months, then the sweater is an absolutely perfect gift. Of course, ladies, men also look great in sweaters so no reason you can’t get your husband one as well. Not into sweaters? No problem. How about a nice warm wool scarf. And, for you ladies, if you really want to impress your husband, why not knit him a wool scarf yourself? Yes, it’s a lot of work, but isn’t he worth it? Besides. it will be a lot cheaper than going out and buying one. For those of you not into wool, there’s always the traditional gift of copper. Here is where you can get very creative. Ladies, if your husband is a coin collector, why not get him a rare collection of pennies? Yes, you’ll probably have to pay quite a few bucks for each one, but this is one gift that over time will actually increase in value. If you really want to do something corny but cute, get your wife a new copper mailbox for your house and promise her that everyday you will make sure that she has a nice romantic card or something inside it to brighten her day. If you want to go for the modern gift on this anniversary, you’re looking at getting desk sets. There are probably more kinds of desk sets that you can get your work at home guy or gal than Carter has liver pills. Your standard desk set will usually come with a letter opener, pen and pencil holder, letter holder, business card holder and memo case. Of course there are many variations on this so take your time in picking one out. There is no reason not to be able to come up with a great anniversary gift for your seventh year of wedded bliss. Jewelry Gifts for Bridesmaids

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Arsene Bergkamp Putting a wedding together involves lots of details. One of the details is what to get bridesmaids to thank them for their involvement. Jewelry Gifts for Bridesmaids Your wedding is one of the most important and memorable events that you’ll ever plan. From choosing the date, to the theme, to your dress there seems to be a million different details to go over. One item that is often overlooked but just as important as other aspects of your wedding is taking care of your bridal party. Choosing who will be your bridesmaids and groomsmen, what they’ll wear and how they’ll perform at your wedding are all necessary decisions for your wedding plans. Another thing you’ll want to consider is how to thank your bridesmaids for performing the service of being in your wedding party. Bridesmaids really do have to go through a lot to be in a wedding. They must purchase a bridesmaid dress (which can cost hundreds of dollars), matching accessories, and also pay to get their hair and makeup done. If the bridesmaids are from out of town, there is the cost of traveling to the wedding and staying at the wedding location. Finally, often times bridesmaids are responsible for planning both the bridal shower and bachelorette parties for the bride. All of these expenses and time consuming tasks can really add up, so its important to show these ladies how much they’re appreciated. Jewelry for bridesmaids can be a welcome and beautiful gift. When choosing jewelry as a gift for your bridesmaids, you have the choice of giving them something that’s specifically meant to be worn at the wedding itself, or jewelry that is just meant to be a token of your friendship. Semi-precious stones, such as cultured pearls, and Swarovski crystals are moderately priced enough to be practical as gifts, but nice enough to be treasured mementos Sterling silver is a classic metal that’s perfect for bracelets, necklaces and earrings, and its color can match well with all sorts of clothing styles and even bridesmaid dresses. To avoid any conflict, give all of your bridesmaids similar jewelry in style and cost. It is appropriate, however, to give your maid of honor a more expensive gift, as she is a special person in the bridal party with more responsibility. Most brides won’t spend a lot of time thinking about gifts for their wedding party, but this small gesture to your bridesmaids will definitely be appreciated. Gifts for the groomsmen are also a nice touch, but carrying out this task usually falls to the groom. Arsene Bergkamp is with JewelryStoresforYou.com - a directory of jewelry stores. Our Christian Gift Is About Relationship, Not Ritual

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

By Steven Coffman Many Christians today and throughout our history, have missed the true point in their beliefs and practices with what they observe and do in their obligations to our Father in heaven. What I mean by this is, that many of us emphasize on the ritual aspects in the bible as the path that can be taken to personally reach heaven by. Many of us emphasize on many ways of interpretation on the bibles written word that we miss the most important two wishes, (commandments) that our Father wants us to do for Him. Our Fathers first wish for us is that it is that we develop and have a deep, meaningful relationship with Him. His second wish is regarding our treatment and actions towards our fellow man. In Matthew 22:35-40 (NCV) Jesus was asked by one of the Pharisees that was an expert in the Law of Moses which commandments in the law is the most important. Jesus answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: Love your neighbor as you love yourself. All the law and the writings of the prophets depend on these two commands. An example in the Bible that shows the true emphasis is on relationship and not ritual is Matthew 12:1-7 (NCV) Jesus was walking through some fields of grain on the Sabbath day. His followers were hungry, so they began to pick the grain and eat it. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to Jesus, Look! Your followers are doing what is unlawful to do on the Sabbath day. Jesus answered, Have you not read what David did when he and the people with him were hungry? He went into Gods house, and he and those with him ate the holy bread, which was lawful only for priests to eat. And have you not read in the Law of Moses that on every Sabbath day the priests in the Temple break this law about the Sabbath day? But the priests are not wrong for doing that. I tell you that there is something here that is greater than the Temple. The Scripture says, I want kindness more than I want animal sacrifices. You dont really know what those words mean. If you understood them, you would not judge those who have done nothing wrong. Yet time and time again throughout history Christian leaders, clergy, and layman have missed or overlooked this emphasis as the basis for our Christian beliefs. Mark 7:9 (NCV) You cleverly ignore the commands of God, so you can follow your own teachings. Galatians 6:1 Brothers and sisters, it someone in your group does something wrong, you who are spiritual should go to that person and gently help make him right again. Body Fat : How To Measuring Your Body Fat By Yourself?

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Piti Niyomsirivanich The primary purpose of body fat is the storage of energy to be used by muscles. Subcutaneous fat (under-the-skin) also helps provide warmth and protection for our bodies. Internal fat helps support and provide protection for the spinal cord, hear and vital organs. Body fat is also crucial in the utilization of vitamins A, D, E, and K by the body (these vitamins are fat soluble). In short, you wouldnt be able to survive without some body fat. The real problem isnt body fat, its excess body fat. Excess body fat is associated with increased risks for heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, stroke, and some certain cancers. Emotional health and well being are also unfortunately often at risk due to societal pressures on being thin. Isnt the Body Mass Index a better measurement indicator for body fat?Body Mass Index, or BMI, is simply a correlation between a persons height and weight. BMI does not measure body fat. Just like any bathroom scale, BMI cannot distinguish between people who are heavy with fat and those who have a large amount of muscle. Since muscle weighs more than fat, BMI could give you a wrong result. There are several popular methods for measure your body fat. Following are three of the most popular: 1) Hydrostatic weighting, in which a person’s mass is measured both in and out of a tank of water,a gold standard for estimate your body fat. This test is based on the assumption that lean tissue is denser than fat–that is, lean tissue will sink and fat tissue’ll float. However, hydrostatic testing is simply not practical for personal use on a regular basis. Who wants to go to an exercise physiology lab and get dunked underwater every weeks? 2) Skin fold measurement with a caliper involves measuring subcutaneous (under-the-skin) fat with a caliper at certain point on your body. Skinfold testing is based on the premise that the majority of your body fat is subcutaneous right below your skin where you can see and grab it by pinching. For years, a skinfold test could only be performed by somebody else. A second person was required to pinch your fat at several locations, including spots you cant reach, such as your upper back. But I know how to measure your own body fat at home with the one suprailiac site skinfold test–By using Accu-Measure. The Accu-Measure is a registered medical device approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The United States Patent and Trademark office awarded the patent to Accu-Measure in 1992 for a skinfold caliper for an individual to accurately and inexpensively measure ones own body fat. According to a clinical study from the December 1998 issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, “Validity of Self-Assessment Techniques for Estimating Percent Fat in Men and Women.” The Accu-Measure was recommended over another self-assessment device, even the Futrex 1000, a near infrared device, which significantly overestimated % body fat. 3) Anthropometric measurement is an another test you can do at home. This test is based on assumption that fat is distributed at certain site on the body such as neck, wrist, and waist line. Muscle tissue is usually found at sites such as the biceps, forearm, and calf. The following two anthropometric tests-one for males and one for females- will help you estimate your percentage of body fat. These formulas are from Philip L. Goglia’s book, Turn Up the Heat: Unlock the fat Burning Power of Your Metabolism, and have a plus or minus error rate of 5 percent. All you nee is a cloth tape and a calculator AT Home Body Fat Test —————————– Step 1.) Taking Measurements —————————– 1.1 Height in inches——————(A) 1.2 Hips in inches——————–(B) 1.3 Waist in inches——————-(C) 1.4 Weight in pounds——————(D) ———————————————— Step 2.) Determining Your Percentage of Body Fat ———————————————— For Males : Your Approximate Body Fat Percentage is = {[(Hips x 1.4)-2]+[(Waist x 0.72)-4]}-(Height x 0.61)-10 For Females: Your Approximate Body Fat Percentage is = {[(Hips x 1.4)-1]+[(Waist x 0.72)-2]}-(Height x 0.61)-10 You don’t necessarily have to get your body fat tested to know that you’re losing your fat. If you have been exerciseing and eating properly and your clothes begin to feel looser, if you find yourself taking in your belt a notch or two. You’ll know that you are losing your fat and gaining lean muscle. Calculate Pounds of Body Fat and Lean Muscle——————————————— The final Step is to take your total weight and calculate how many pounds of fat you carry and how many pounds of lean muscle. Use the following two formulas Total weight(lb.)x percent body fat = total pounds of fatTotal Weight(lb.)-total pounds of fat= total pounds of lean muscle However, Body composition isn’t the only important indicator of your health status. Just because your body fat is in the healthy range, it doesn’t mean that your heart and lungs are fit. For anyone trying to slim down, a body-fat test is a better way to monitor progress than the scale is.
